Alastair Philip Wiper is an English photographer with a deep passion for capturing industry, science, and architecture in the making. His travels naturally led him to explore the Maersk Triple E, the largest class of cargo ship in the world. He was unable to catch a tour of one in Copenhagen, so he persuaded Wired magazine to send him to South Korea to photograph a different one in the process of construction. This piece was originally shown in Wired Magazine’s September 2014 issue.
Wiper arrived at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering shipyard, a gargantuan ship-building construction site. There he found 46,000 people working together to move colossal segments of ships with cranes, positioning them together like puzzle pieces.
It’s mind boggling to think that the Triple E, as humongous as it is, is only one of 100 different ships being simultaneously constructed on-site.
